Deir el Medina

Not far from the Colossi of Memnon was a narrow valley reaching into the desert hills called Deir el Medina (Medeeneh or Madinah). This was the village of the artists who built the tombs of the New Kingdom Pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings. In their off-hours they built their own tombs, and the art they crafted into these tombs can be surprising.
